The Kawasaki KLR650 has long been a stalwart of the Kawasaki dual sport range. Having been introduced to their lineup in 1987, these workhorses remained pretty much unchanged for 20 years. The single cylinder four stroke engine proved reliable, while perhaps a bit low on power, nevertheless the bike became popular as a capable off road adventure bike both here in Australia and elsewhere. With a stock 23 litre fuel capacity, easily added motorbike luggage racks and decent ground clearance, these big thumpers became popular tourers and commuters, often featuring the most iconic accessory seen in all of motorcycling when on the back of the luggage rack was a milk crate, rather than a high end set of saddlebags. For the serious adventurers a range of aftermarket accessories including even larger fuel tanks and windscreens could allow for even more isolated excursions. For 2008 the bike did undergo some updates, with new edition attaining more modern aesthetics thanks to new headlights and fairings, new handlebar controls, new rear swingarm and rear suspension and most importantly increased power. Some of these updates took away from the dirt bike feel of the original KLR as the new models featured more Ninja road bike oriented plastics and panels, which were a bit more fragile than the typical adventure rider tends to appreciate.
